Wichita State University, or WSU for short, is a an American state-supported university located in the city of Wichita, which is the county seat of Sedgwick County, situated in the US state of Kansas, with a population of more than 366 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 51st largest city in the country, as well as the most populated city in the state.
WSU was founded by the Rev. Joseph Homer Parker, as a private Congregational school, first starting under the name of Fairmount College, officially entered the state system of higher education on July 1, 1964, after operating for 38 years as a municipal university, being today one of the 6 state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, as well as one of the 3 research universities in the state, along with Kansas State University and the University of Kansas.
Wichita State has an enrollment of approximately 14 000 students, to whom it offers more than 60 undergraduate degree programs, in over 200 areas of studied, through 6 undergraduate colleges, including W. Frank Barton School of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education and College of Health Professions. WSU’s Graduate School offers an extensive educational program, including 44 master’s degrees in more then 100 areas of study, as well as a specialist in education degree.
The athletic teams from WSU are known as the Wichita State Shockers, who compete in the NCAA Division I, in various sports, the men’s baseball team being the highest winning team for the past 31 years, having numerous conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances, winning the national championship in ’89, and being runner-up in ’82, ’91 and ’93. The men’s basketball team also contributed to WSU’s fame, reaching the Final Four in ’65, the Elite Eight in ’81 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2006.
The list of WSU notable alumni contains resonant names such as Dan and Frank Carney - co-founders of Pizza Hut, Chris Barnes - PBA professional bowler (2007-08 PBA Player of the Year) and official USBC spokesperson, Earl G. Yarbrough - current president of Savannah State University, Bill Parcells - Former Head Coach in the National Football League, current Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
